Each of my work and travel experiences have formed and shaped me into the teacher I am becoming. My work at Sorrento Centre has given me the experience of providing radical and generous hospitality to people from all walks and backgrounds in life and engaged in providing varied programming for all ages. In my role as the Children Youth and Family Life Ministry Coordinator I work with children and youth in both providing programming and mentorship and engage in relationships with their families. My experience in South Korea has opened my eyes to the diversity of the world and how inter-cultural learning experiences bring insights that otherwise would not be at the table. Each of these experiences and perspectives I will be bringing into the classroom, both my successes and my many learnings.

KamloopsKidz Daycare
As an employee at KamloopsKidz daycare, during the completion of the Bachelor of Education program, I have spent time in the Infant, Toddler, Children, and Schooler programs. As one of the classroom teachers I planned curriculum for
each week using the BC Early Learning Framework (ELF) guiding document to inform my planning and teaching. Students had daily opportunities for circle, hands-on-learning, arts and crafts, free play, and significant outdoor time. KamloopsKidz uses the OWNA app to stay in contact with parents with regular activity and learning posts and daily personal information shared for each child. This experience allowed me the opportunity to engage with parents about their child’s learning and well-being, plan weekly curriculum and teach from it, engage the Schooler program in outdoor education and play, and become familiar with the BC Early Learning Framework.

Sorrento Centre Retreat and Conference Centre
While pursing my Bachelor of General Studies I worked at Sorrento Centre each summer in the role as the Summer Staff Coordinator. In the fall of 2012 I was hired into the permanent position of Associate Director overseeing all program development an implementation for the organization, providing on site/on call care to guests and staff, and mentorship and training to our Summer Youth Staff Team. I provided support to the management team, Board of Directors, guests, and private rental groups.  I served twice during this time as the Interim Executive Director, on top of my responsibilities I oversaw the running of a $1.5 million operating budget, fundraising, capital projects, and all human resource work.

Children, Youth and Family Life Coordinator, St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral
I have been employed by St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in Kamloops, BC since 2010 to plan and implement programming for children, youth and families. This experience has provided me with ongoing teaching and relationship building with young people and their families.

South Korea, World Council of Churches
In the Fall of 2013 I traveled to Busan, South Korea as an elected delegate to the World Council of Churches Assembly. I had never been outside of North America and in many ways was unprepared for the experience that I had in South Korea.

The learning I tookaway from this experience has influenced how I work with other people especially in the midst of diversity and different perspectives. I learned first hand the privilege that I am seen to have as an English speaking caucasian Canadian which has been influential in how I conduct myself and ensure that my welcome of others is vast and generous. I had the privilege of serving on a sub-committee which allowed me the experience of working with a diverse group of people for a common cause while writing public issue statements. I learned a lot while engaging in this work about different topics alongside learning about the different cultures and perspectives that each member of the small working group brought to the table.
